The
first novel our class will read is Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIMH.
We will discuss society issues raised by this book, and the students
completed research on contagious diseases and the various animals and
plants discussed in the novel. We plan to begin
reading The Witch of Blackbird Pond the second week in
October.
This novel study coincides with our study of American Colonization in social studies.
This novel is an exciting book to ask your child about.
In addition, throughout the year we will investigate various types of
poetry. Look for examples of your child's "Lizard
Limericks", Haiku, and Diamante poetry.
Each week, students are assigned a spelling contract that is due at
the end of the week. Daily Oral Language (DOL) assignments are
distributed on Monday, checked on Wednesday, and tested on
Fridays. During the study of a novel, students are also assigned
vocabulary words on Monday and are tested over these words on
Friday. LIBRARY:
We visit the library regularly every other Wednesdays from
8:30-9:15. Mrs. Painter provides the students with a lesson,
reads the students a book, and then the students check out books for a
two week period. Students may check out a book of his/her choice,
a "buddy book" for our second grade buddies (see below), and a book for
monthly book reports. See the book reports section for more
information on this. BUDDIES: Our second grade buddy class in Mrs.
Bollish's class. We visit with them every other Friday from
18:45-9:15. In addition to reading to each other, we complete
projects in math and language arts, perform science experiments, and of
course occasionally make something to eat! ***Current
Buddy Projects: We assembled football glyphs in honor
of the kick-off of the football season. We make gingerbread and
enjoyed The Jalapeno Man.
